Biffy Clyro - The Captain
The Captain is the third single to be released from Biffy Clyro’s upcoming album Only Revolutions. As may have been apparent from the first two singles already released from the record, anyone hoping for a return to the darker style of the band's earlier LPs will be somewhat disappointed. Despite this, when compared to the their work since 2007's Puzzle and the genre as a whole, the song is a wonderful, upbeat example of modern alternative rock and shows a continuing maturation of the band's style. Prominent use of brass instruments throughout the song contributes heavily to its cheery mood and adds a distinction from a simple guitar, bass and drums sound. The lyrical content, though somewhat lacking in any clear meaning or message (I may just be missing the point), avoids being clichéd or derivative. Overall, 'The Captain' is a fantastic song and a good sign for the potential quality of the upcoming album.
Released on 26th October 2009 on 14th Floor Records
