Pull Tiger Tail @ Barfly Camden, December 06

“Rising stars of 2007 Pull Tiger Tail, didn’t fail to live up to the hype at London’s barfly pub in Camden.”

Days before the day of the gig, I’ll be honest and say that the only opinion of Pull Tiger Tail I had was mainly built from word of mouth. Sadly what I knew was not entirely good news. Many had told me that they were good but needed to be more daring, also that their style was great… but will it last when the brit band scene slows down, or will they just get pushed aside? At the same time, however, this did clash with my personal opinion of Pull Tiger Tail being a fun spin on the indie scene, as radio star Colin Murray would agree. Will Levis “ones to watch” influence my decision when live?

When you arrive at their choice of gig venues they immediately keep up with the fun theme by supplying you with masks, tiger masks! Silly…. But it works! Especially after about 5 pints on the way home. Supporting Pull Tiger Tail on this night was Action Plan. A little note on them is that their lead can sing, REALLY sing, and lets be honest it makes a change.

Pull tiger tail, up next and the crowd seems to be full of followers who know them far better than I had expected. Not only are they recognised before going on by just about everyone, but before even kicking off, requests are being blared at them from in front of the stage. The opening track, Mr 100%, is a fan fave by far. Due only to the fact that it is to be released perhaps? Not in this case. Mr 100% on record breaks straight into a strong intro and follows through to a very catchy track in its own right. Live however, as I had hoped, it set the scene for the rest of the gig, with them working the supportive crowd well and impressing the likes of me, the new-comer, straight off. What I feel also has to be said, is this band have a drummer who is clearly a huge talent in himself.

This guy can drum!

Finally a new band where the drummer doesn’t simply learn the beat to a given song and can actually play!

Other tracks such as Animator and Lets lightning (final track and next single) also make a big impact on the room, the latter in particular. Both down simply to what Pull Tiger Tail seem to do best with their music and that’s to simply; make good songs, catchy. Its the catchy “stuck in your head” style of the pull tiger tail songs is what I think separates them from the indie brit cr*p crop we see all too much of. All in all, a very impressive first impression.

Before they went on, I got a chance to chat to the band and I found them to be all in all: bluddy lovely. They came across very excited about all the attention they were getting but certainly didn’t seem cocky. Like me they also agreed that the current scene of indie music is getting very samey, bland and totally lacking any character. Non-surprisingly they then chose to point out that they, like bands such as Mistys Big Adventure, hope to change that.
