Idlewild @ The Shaw Theatre

This was the most civilised gig I have been to. The Shaw Theatre is a theatre hence the name but this means that its all seated, all the seats are comfy and that there is air conditioning, no smoking allowed and there weren't any huge crowds. This gig would have been enjoyed by my parents, and thats not to knock it because they have good taste in music but the comfort of it all would have suited anyone.

Venue aside this was a truely beautiful performance and i can say that without sounding too arsey or up myself because it was really amazing. The atmosphere was so cosy there was a sense of being priveleged to be seeing them in such a small venue and for an acoustic gig. This by their own admission was an experimental tour, but experiment or no experiment this captivating. Idlewild might be known for fans of their earlier albums as even verging on punky but throughout all their albums they have intertwined some slow songs with some happy upbeat songs together with the slightly more hardcore songs. The diverse nature of idlewild meant that I wasn't surprised with the way they perforemed this alleged 'experiment'. However this is also the band that were named best live band in the mid to late 90's for performances that were far from acoustic. It was therefore the transformation of tracks like "discourage" to acoustic that really took me aback. They mixed tracks like that with more obvious choices for an acoustic tour such as "chaos" and "american english". They also introduced some tracks of a forthcoming new album that were equally beautiful. The passion and sheer love for making music was evident throughout and it therefore made for a really absorbing gig, one which i never wanted to end.

Roddy Woomble's voice was amazing and that together with the lighting
on the set made you feel like you were watching them through a window playing their music in a lounge or something. This was a truely special and unforgettable night and I find it hard to actually put it in words how different and amazing it was. I hear there is going to be another acoustic tour later this year, thats a must see for anyone!
