Team America: World Police
Hey Terrorists! Terrorise This!Even that great guarantor of world security - George Walker Bush -couldn't have put it as succinctly as the heroine of Team America: World Police, the new film from Trey Parker and Matt Stone, co-creators of South Park. Rated 15, Team America is a very different take on the War on Terror compared to the recent offering from Michael Moore; for one thing its cast is composed entirely of puppets. But these aren't just wimpy Thunderbirds-type puppets..oh-ho-ho-no, these puppets are all-action heroes who can vomit inexhaustibly and copulate in more positions than the Karma Sutra itself would recommend!
The plot, which my friend admitted he got involved in to an embarrassingly large extent, focuses on the eponymous Team America, an international police force, who hunt down the terrorists like the Islamic fundamentalists they are. After 'Intelligence' (who is a computer!) uncovers a potential world-destroying terrorist plot ("911 times 1,000 ... no, you don't mean, yes - 911,000!"), the Team recruit Gary Johnston (voiced by Parker), an actor (and thus best qualified to fight terrorism) to infiltrate the terrorists and bring them down! Little do they know, however, that the mastermind is none other than North Korean despot, Kim Jong-Il, and that's only the beginning of the craziness!
Chock-full of hilarious moments (including a very catchy, albeit somewhat profane, theme tune) and impressions of actors (watch out for Matt Damon!) and world leaders (I wish more comics would imitate Kim Jong-Il: Bremner, MacGowan et al take note..), Team America is funny in parts. It's not quite so humorous all the way through and the satire can get a bit tiring. Also, some may find the characterisation of Muslims offensive though, and the film does make this obvious, it's much more making fun of the way some Americans think of Islam and the Middle East than the religion and the people themselves.
