Winnebago Deal
Winnebago Deal - not, as you might expect, a caravan sale, nor the beer they're named after. They are a two-piece rock band, but before anyone says White Stripes etc, etc, it's not. Unless White took a wad of speed into the bollocks and a big slice of too loud my ears are bleeding. For the sound is verging on head bang metal
There may only be two of them but they sound much like a bag of monkeys (and probably smell like it too, given the intensity they play at) and as a result sound very tight.
The new album "Dead Gone" disappointingly doesn't contain the only song I'd heard of theirs prior to this review, the song "Manhunt" (great chorus line "hunted hunted down get that sonofabitchoutoftown"). This was probably due to the fact they've switched labels, from Fierce Panda to Double Dragon Records
But then again, the sonic assault starts immediately with a clear statement of intent the barnstorming sixty second intro-track "Line Up", is all shouting, all banging, all action; this segues abruptly into "breakdown", an angsty destroy the bedroom kinda song.
Latest single Cobra - "I think its clear we're cool we've nothing else to do", "Did it done it doing it again" is perhaps a bit too much of a cliché for chorus use, but the song is only two minutes odd so it works well. "Shankfight" slows things down a tad in the middle in a menacing way, and it duly delivers on this with yet more aural mind fuck at the end. The other sub 3min songs occupying the centre of the album are a bit non-descript; simply hardcore riff chugging and shouting, but it?s all mindless fun nonetheless. The title track is a seven and a half minute instrumental but it's no rock epic (not surprising, there's only two of them and they aren't octopuses) it has one riff repeated at varying speeds and amplitudes and has a nice false ending in the middle with some White Stripes-esque telepathy improv, but it works better live and is a bit indulgent on the album.
Ok, some of the songs are overly long leading to the album totalling a somewhat unnecessary forty minutes where it could've been done in thirty, the lyrics are never more than mere sloganeering, the riffs aren't groundbreaking, the drumming is basically hitting them really hard or fast or hard and fast, the sound is rawer than sushi, oh and subtlety? What the fuck's that?
But it's all done in a fun and addictive "iliketheringinginmyears" kind of way, and some of the arrangements are pretty smart, and they obviously have a lot of love for what they do.
I reckon it would suit the kind of guy who thinks "personal stereo" is an abbreviation for "personally-idon'tgiveashitifyouthinkitstooloud stereo" and in small doses it should be fine for everyone else. They will need to work hard on the toilet circuit in Camden to build the fan base and a re-release of manhunt would go far as it is by far their best song.
